On Saturday February 25, 2017, the preliminary rounds of the Santa Barbara County High School Mock Trial Competition took place at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Christopher Haskell and Shannon DeNatale Boyd volunteered as scorers.

The Mock Trial Competition is sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, and co-sponsored by the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Daily Journal Corp. Seven local high schools participated this year – Cabrillo, Carpinteria, Dos Pueblos, Laguna Blanca, San Marcos, Santa Barbara, and Santa Ynez. Last year, Dos Pueblos won the State Competition and went on to compete in the Nationals. Mock Trials bring students together to test their education and provide experience and training in area of Constitutional law and the American legal system. Teachers and attorneys volunteer as coaches and advisors to offer their assistance. Local attorneys and Judicial officers volunteer to participate as scorers and Judges.
